The lightbulbs, like a number of other things, are a symbol of a mindset and a philosophy of government. It shows the extent to which the government feels it can legitimately control our lives. It doesn't actually make a hell of a lot of difference to me, and in fact, most of the bulbs in my house now are CFLs.
The principle is the issue, not the lightbulbs.
Along similar lines, do you really think the "colored" drinking fountains next to the "white" drinking fountains in segregated areas delivered inferior water from the exact same pipes? But then the water quality wasn't the critical issue then, was it?
