And it's theorized that real junk DNA loiters, in part, for similar "reasons", as a library of useful "subroutines".
I think this is a very strong theory. As evolution proceeds through billions of years, more and more subroutines are available and large evolutionary steps can be taken with simple DNA equivalents of switching a routine on and off. It would certainly explain why evolution seems operate more rapidly and in larger leaps as time goes on. It took hundreds of millions of years for random selection of molecular patterns to result in the simplest life forms, but now a snake can grow entire legs if the right "switch" is hit.
The e-mails revealed many things besides simple code stuff. I linked to an article that discusses it here, and called out what I thought was the key point.
I have the entire file, of course. It's lunacy to think that someone generated 160 MB of text as a fraud, and to date, nobody mentioned in the files has said "this particular e-mail is a fake." Or even tried to.
