Runaway Toyotas

I have a runaway Toyota related question. I have never owned an automobile with an automatic transmission, and I've only driven a few, mostly rentals, so I honestly don't know the answer to this question. Is it possible to stop an automobile with a jammed accelerator by just turning off the ignition?

I know you can do that with a manual gearbox, and if you leave it in gear the compression will slow you down quickly, but will an automatic work the same? I've read of people trying to stop their runaway Toyotas with brakes, emergency brakes, and shifting to "N", with no success. With the ignition turned off the power steering and power brake assist would quit but you'd still have manual control of the car.

There have been reports of cars accelerating until they crash, with the drivers powerless to stop them. Are these people just panicking and forgetting the obvious, or is there a reason why simply switching the car off won't work?
