You're Missing the point
The point being that this is something that there is no easy fix for. If you think anyone on the right would actually eliminate SS you are completely nuts. Thus there are very few solutions. Cutting back benefits to wealthier Americans, i.e., means testing, is one obvious option. Raising taxes to levels more common in Europe is another. A national sales tax or value added tax are what is going to be put on the table eventually. I favor a VAT if forced to choose one or the other. A line item veto to reign in discretionary spending wouldn't be a bad idea either but that won't balance the budget by itself.
