It occurs to me that in states where there are more out of wedlock pregnancies, early divorces, etc., there are more people on the "dole." As a consequence, people in those states resent having to pay taxes to support all these "freeloaders." It's an easy jump from there to voting Republican.
This is an interesting dynamic to explore.
