The origin of partisan politics
I think we can lay it securely at the doorstep of Thomas Jefferson, the original Republican (though they called themselves the Democratic-Republican party, sometimes referring to themselves ad Republicans and sometimes Democrats--hell, they were trying to have it both ways even back then.)
