"Frum is as committed a conservative as I have ever known. Recent charges that he hopes to ingratiate himself with liberals will seem ludicrous to anyone who recalls how, even in college, he relished infuriating the Left in his columns. He was also, however, fact-driven. The Journal asked him to do a survey of economists on the subject of inequality, and he was taken aback to discover that the rise in economic inequality was real. Conservatives didn't want to hear that."
"...extremism, insularity, and anti-intellectualism are thriving within the conservative movement as they have not since the 1960s. Haven't you heard? Hillary Rodham Clinton and Benito Mussolini are essentially the same thing! President Obama is working to end the American Republic and impose European-style socialism!"
"Conservatives in their heyday had brought forward a lot of research that liberals didn't want to hear, on busing, crime, taxation," Frum says. They used that research to break liberals' hegemony. But in the post-Reagan era, new information was making conservatives uncomfortable -- information about rising inequality, environmental problems such as climate change, Reagan's failure to uproot the welfare state. "So what were we going to do with this information? It was becoming ominously apparent that what we were going to do was ignore it."
""In the time since we've been talking, 120 e-mails," he told me during our interview. Most of the messages - and not just those from liberals - have been supportive. "There are a lot of conservatives who just do not like the Fox News view of the world." "
Are you ready to revise your opinion of this gentleman and his POV yet? He seems to be getting quite a following among responsible conservatives, a successor to WF Buckley. Not that the wacko right cared much for him, either.
