For an interesting fictional look at this phenomenon, I highly recommend Scorsese's film "Gangs of New York" (2002), set in 1860s Manhattan.

Even if you find the history somewhat sketchy, as I confess I did, Daniel Day-Lewis's performance as Bill the Butcher is absolutely breathtaking.
