Maybe I am wrong but I saw nothing to imply any sort of crowd control. Each signal seemed to be designed to communicate with a speaker.
Agreement (twinkle), Disagree (down twinkle), Speak up (raise the roof) etc etc.
The hand signal you learned were to communicate with a few riggers who were looking intently for your signals.
Your first comment convinces me that none of this, tea party or Wall Streeters are your cup of tea.
Why appear to support something distasteful to you just to express your general opposition to conservatism. This is the stuff of the Palestine impasse.
