I've been at a couple of demonstrations back in the "Cambodia bombing" days at the university. I was there for the same reason a large portion of the crowd was there - it was more interesting than physics class.
I was smart enough to stay out of the tear gas, but not smart enough to avoid messing with a used canister I found. This is when I discovered that tear gas is not a gas, that would be gone from a used container, but a fine powder that would poof remnants in your face if you fiddled with the container.
