Many conservatives (including me) don't like the idea of having a Federal sales tax at the same time as a Federal income tax. That's asking for it. But the details of these things can be worked out. Congress makes the laws, not a president. The key is moving us away from the grotesque tax system we have now. As with entitlement reform, it has to be done in stages. Removing the mortgage deduction is something that needs to be done slowly, although in 1986 they killed the personal interest deduction in one fell swoop.
Frankly, given the power our tax code gives politicians, I doubt any radical changes will get anywhere. What I want at this point in the Oval Office is someone with the right principles who will start moving us in the right direction.
