It used to be that unemployment benefits ran 26 weeks. Recessions and unemployment were no less painful years ago than they are now. Somehow, we survived. I'm a self-employed contractor, and I don't get any unemployment benefits at all.
The unemployed are a useful political tool to Democrats, a group of Americans dependent on the State for their existence. Democrats would like this group to be as large as possible.
The benefits are being used now as a political weapon. Rumor has it that the Democrats are going to tie an unemployment extension to tax increases on businesses and investors, and dare the Republicans to shoot it down.
The wealthy will create more jobs when we have a government in place that isn't going to destroy them for succeeding.
