Re: "Subliminal Seduction"

Oh, I'm well aware that advertisers put a great deal of effort into presentation, lighting, psychology, characters, timing, and lots of other things. Nowadays, in the land of DVRs, it takes some doing to get someone to stop fast-forwarding and go back to take a look.

This is not harmful. Most halfway intelligent people realize that ads are hardly an objective analysis of a given product. If you look hard enough you might find someone still astonished that the Big Mac he ordered doesn't look much like the giant juicy color picture on the wall, but most people handle advertising gimmicks as a matter of course.

In some magazine a few years ago I read a detailed analysis of how the artwork for this logo was produced:

The shape of the eyebrows, the pose, the tilt of the mouth, the color scheme, all were designed to project a humorous, non-threatening personality that stands out on the shelves.

Now, where I start to get skeptical is when the person analyzing the ads starts to see everything out there only in the context of sex, or invisible words only he can see.
