^a vicious (or should I say "viscous") rumour which was started by conservatives.^
"Conservatives?" The stuff I looked up seemed to imply that the McCain rumor was started by "one wacko" as you put it: Ted Sampley, who doesn't seem to be readily identifiable as having a particular political leaning, although I haven't gone over all the material (not that interested). He seems to be as anti-Kerry as he is anti-McCain. And check this out. Small world, ain't it?
Yet another case of a large body of information balancing like an inverted pyramid on very few sources. Sometimes just one.
Careful you don't start a "viscous rumor" of your own by jumping to a conclusion.
