I have a friend who was a Marine, and he loved to tell this Paris Island story.
The drill instructor used to send his platoon into the bush on night problems, in full kit and with rifles slung over their shoulders. Then he would climb up a tree and jump down on the last guy in line and beat the crap out of him. The recruits finally decided to "fix bayonets" before they started their march, and after going under one big oak, they heard this eerie voice float down from above..." NOW you're thinking, scumbags..."
