I did a little recreational reading on Ted Sampley. What a piece of work. Not only did he slam McCain and Kerry, but he went after John Murtha's war record, too. And had elliptical connections to the swift boat crowd.

I can see Sampley's motivation, he had a sordid little scam going as a self-appointed MIA/POW "activist" which McCain exposed. It was money. But what drives others to do this? Some misguided sense of patriotism? An ideological malfunction? A thirst for power?
