<Almost a third of women who had abortions identified themselves as Catholic. That one surprised me too.
As a former Catholic, it didn't surprise me at all.
Think about it: Use birth control -- mortal sin. Have abortion -- mortal sin.
Use rhythm method (the Hail Mary play of the contraceptive world) -- no sin. Maybe you get lucky. Maybe not.
By choosing Vatican Roulette with abortion as the back-up plan, you minimize your mortal sin index. And the man has no sins at all to worry about. If she has the abortion, it's all on her, as long as she takes the bus to the hospital.
As long as every birth control pill is the moral equivalent of abortion in Catholic teachings on contraception, this will continue. After all, one doesn't have an abortion every day.
Of course, many Catholics ignore or remain deliberately ignorant of the Church's teachings on this subject. Smart priests and bishops leave it alone.
