Five nines of people who buy computers should buy a name brand unit, completely assembled ready to go right out of the box.
I like doing it, in spite of the occasional screaming fit and laying on the floor crying. Like I said, Hardware's easy, Software will make you nutz.
It can be cheaper, and it is absolutely not for the faint of heart. When it's 4 in the morning and you're loading the Operating System for the umpteenth time, that's when you know you're completely out of your mind.
Right now I am trying to get the old system ready for someone else, loaded Win98SE, Everything works fine, except one, when I load the drivers for the PCI Modem, the damned thing locks up. I've downloaded the updated version, pulled the card ans installed it on another machine, works fine, same O/S.
But, it will not work on that machine.
Wierd thing is, it is the same modem Slick installed on it when he built it. Worked fine before, now won't.
