I was thinking about my brother. His wife got a decent bonus so he asked me to hold his hand while he shopped for a new system to replace his 386 (I'm not kidding). "We" got a refurbished P4 2.4 Compac for $899. I've been told Compac is too proprietary to upgrade but the mobo had 2 free PCI slots and a free AGP because it had an on-board 48meg graphics adapter. It also had a free bay for an additional HD or whatever.

Myself, I'm actually still pretty happy with my K6-2. My 16meg Voodoo3 3000 is a bit of a problem though. Mech Warrior 4 slows to a crawl in the final mission.

I saw that I could upgrade to a 64meg G-force 4 MX440. This card is a lot less powerful than the Ti (Titanium) series G-force card but it's also over $200 less.

I was thinking of getting a DDR board with the VIA KT266A chipset and an XP processor. Now they have the KT333, oops, the KT400...

You might want to check the power requirements for the P4 system you're going to build. You may need a new Power supply...
