Filters

For filter and fan ideas, check out overclocking sites.

The most effective solution I've come across is to (ready to wince??) cut a hole in the non-mo-board side of your case, near the bottom so you're sucking in the coolest air possible, and screw on an 80mm 12v computer fan. One of them big'guns. You can get them with a Molex connector to connect to one of your many extra power connectors.

For fans, the bigger ones are actually quieter since they need less RPMs to move more air. If you start adding smaller fans, your 'pooter is gonna sound like a 747 taxiing to runway 16Left. The 80mm fans can be as quiet as 40db (pretty darn quiet) and can move as much as 80cfm.

When you install the fan, drill bigger holes than the screws require through your case and use rubber grommets. This will help isolate the fan vibration from your case, further quiting the fan.

For a filter, cut a piece of green Brillo pad and attach it to the inside of the metal fan guard (you got a fan with a metal guard, RIGHT??) with just a touch of Elmer's water based glue where apprpriate.

The idea here is to put positive pressure inside your case with the extra fan blowing the air into the case, which will also help with cooling . Since you're blowing in extra air that has been filtered, it will keep dust from coming in through all those extra cracks and crevises, such as around your expansion slots, casing joints and other fans.

To clean your filter, use a can of compressed air and gently blow it off, or remove and wash it. When dry, re-glue it.
