The only location currently being considered by the USA as a permanent repository for nuclear waste is Yucca Mountain in southern Nevada. This site will accept 2000-3000 metric tonnes per year and have a maximum capacity of 75,000 metric tonnes. It will be located 500 meters below the surface and cover an area of 5 square kilometers. Price tag $100 billion including initial environmental assessments. The world produces roughly 10,000 metric tonnes of radioactive waste annually, and it will be roughly 10,000-20,000 years before the radioactivity reduces to ambient levels. At our current production rate we will accumulate 100 million tonnes of nuclear waste in the next 10,000 years, requiring us to find 1333 additional dumping locations. I cannot support nuclear power with this expectation.
Space/Science » in reply to Canada has a pretty good nuclear program
