If you really want to see what life would be like without engineers, all you have to do is go visit some of the truly poor nations of the Earth. You'll find that in some places, as many as half of all children die before age 5, many from easily preventable causes. With no engineers around, these people lack basic utilities like electricity, sanitary water, and waste disposal. In addition, they lack basic technology to increase food production to feed themselves or to safely store and transport their food. Much of what is produced is lost to spoilage. They also lack access to modern medicines that were developed by scientists but manufactured in factories built by engineers.

Doctors Without Borders are the ones that are treating these people's illnesses. Charitable organizations like World Vision, Amnesty International, are providing the money needed to drill wells so villages have clean water. Lobby groups are pressuring governments to forgive loans to 3rd world countries whose crops have failed and have no export revenues, nothing to pay with. Social activists are inventing new economic systems that provide opportunity to extremely poor people, such as micro-credit banking & financing. Environmentalists are developing simple, inexpensive cookstoves that reduce the need for firewood or dung or whatever else poor people burn for fuel, and that cause respiratory diseases, pollution and deforestation.
Where are the engineers? Engineers don't do charity.
