From this story.
I am still totally baffled as to why anyone thinks making them Federal workers is going to increase the effectiveness of the work being done. This has not proven true in almost every other civilian industry where government workers have gone up against private ones. Remember, it was the FAA, FBI, CIA, and other Federal agencies that, excuseably or not, failed to prevent this in the first place.
I am told that Israel's El Al has private airport screeners, which (I believe) are employees of the El Al airline company, not the airports. Are current airport security personnel in the U.S. employees of the airports, not the airlines (I don't know the answer to this)? If this is true, changing this may be the way to go. Airline companies, who have a lot to lose if a plane goes down, have a much bigger stake in successful security than the airports do. Really, how does an airport lose money or personnel if someone blows up a plane over the ocean?
Of course, airline companies may resist the extra costs involved in this when they are already short of money.
Airport security to be nationalized. Great.
