In a nut shell, teh problem is Liberals and Democrats place different priorities first while often denying both sides priorities have validity. It's pretty tough to sort out the right balance of priorities when you totally deny the other side's even have validity.
For example
Stance on Corporations
Liberals: "A bunch of greedy bastards."
Republicans: "The engines of prosperity."
Who's right? Both! Corporations need to make a profit to stay in business. The more money they make the more they can reinvest and grow the economy. To a certain point greed is good. Adam sSmith pointed this out a long time ago. The sum of everyone doing what is best for himself adds up to what is best for us all. A problem arises when certain groups gain more than their fair share of power and their greed runs out of control. When "Corporate Saviors" are paid big bonuses to turn companies around in the short term at the expense of long term viability everyone else looses. While stock holders should limit this behaviour, history suggests government regulation is the most effective form of control. Too many stockholders are also looking only short term these days.

Mark
