Your typical Democratic voter would have voted for Gore, regardless. A large number of people in this country, given nothing else to work with, or no time to think about politics, vote out of habit, or like their Daddy did. There can be no other explanation why groups such as union members--gun-owning, deer-hunting, SUV-driving, family-values-supporting, church-going, heavy-industry-supporting--vote for a party that actively opposes most of these things. Has no one noticed that the Democratic Party of today is not the Democratic Party of the 1960s?

I don't know how many Democrats would have ended up voting for McCain. A lot of Democrats voted for Reagan. Who knows?

Most of the people on this board are here because they are space nuts. I hope I am not sounding too elitist if I point out that this tends to select from the brighter end of the intelligence spectrum, so I am not too surprised that most of the Democrats here tend to be much more openminded and thoughtful than the average. Certainly more than most of our representation in Washington.

I hope you are willing to stipulate that this might apply to the Republicans and Libertarians too... ;)
