Dan Quayle is an excellent example of a good man who was annihilated by the left-wing machine. Painted as a congenital idiot for such crimes against humanity as being less than glib, or mispelling potato, he was jeered off the political stage without anyone ever bothering to argue against his solid, well-thought-out conservative political principles.
Liberals have attempted to bestow the Mantle of Stupidity on pretty much every successful conservative who ever lived, including Reagan, both of the Bushes, Quayle, and many others. William F. Buckley is probably one of the few who has managed to escape so far, but it's probably only a matter of time.
It's not a difficult maneuver, since the groundwork has already been laid by longtime liberal propaganda that simply to be a conservative at all makes it likely that one is mentally deficient. Everything else--a missed word, a malapropism, a Spoonerism--simply confirms the suspicion that has been planted firmly in the American psyche.
Excuse me if I think it's getting a bit old, if not outright insulting. Maybe it's because I'm too sensitive, like my Colorgenics profile says.
