I could make a comment here about the strings attached to those lovely Federal Funds, but I'll leave that for another time.
Yet another example of the bastardization of the First Amendment. The right to say something does not automatically imply the right to force it into everyone's face. The right to talk is not a Right To Be Heard. To assume that my right to Free Speech is being abridged because my "Crack Whore" web site is filtered out on some computers is like assuming my right to Free Speech is being abridged when I write an article for a magazine and some people don't subscribe.
I don't know what jackass software is used in the examples usually given in these articles, where the word "sex" is filtered out. I have a very nice filter program on my kid's Mac that works just fine. As far as I know, my kids have never hit the wall trying to look up legitimate information.
Now personally, I would just as soon see this handled on a local level, and if this Federal law gets shot down in the courts I won't lose any sleep over it. I just find the people grousing about the issue irritating.
The kicker is, of course, that if it was a local decision, and a library board decided to install filters, the usual gangs of liberal idiots would be all over that library with attorneys to force the library to get them split beaver shots back on the screen for the kiddies. Liberals are pro-choice as long as you choose what they want.
Why not just have a kid's area with filters that kids can use unsupervised, and an unfiltered adult area which kids can use if accompanied by an adult? Not exactly brain surgery, folks.
What's really hilarious is that these are all the same liberals who crucified Joe Camel on the off chance that some kid would see him on a billboard and think about cigarettes.
