"because I know that Armies don't shoot civilians unless they are frustrated beyond belief..."
Is that why the Nazi's murdered 6,000,000 Jews in Europe? Out of frustration? Is that why Japanese soldiers in Nanking were laughing when they lined up Chinese children to have contests to see how many heads they could lop off with one swing of their samurai? Does this explain the killing fields of Cambodia?
No, soldiers sometimes do kill civilians out of extreme frustration - I've no doubt Israeli soldiers have - but many instances of mass murder of civilians arise directly out of an insane fascist, totalitarian ideology, or religion, frequently nationalistic in expression, which has completely taken over the hearts and minds of the faithful. And when the Leader gives the order they don't hesitate to enthusiastically slaughter the infidels, or minorities designated as evil troublemakers. This describes the Nazi's, imperial Japan, and also Al Queda and other instances of Islamic extremism, such as the Palestinian lunatics blowing themselves into Paradise along with a dozen Israelis.
