Israel has done magnificiently in her wars, and has been lucky they were stopped when they were.
The Israelis were smart, well-trained, well commanded, well-equipped, mobile and superbly well motivated. And they went for the jugular.
However, in the long run, there weren't enough of them to hold against a vastly larger force, especially with so many Arabs behind them, the residents of the captured territory.
And, they needed munitions. I remember in '73 Nixon stripped the American forces in Europe to supply Israel, and there were serious concerns as to the window this opened for the USSR to invade, should they choose to.
Then, as now, there were implications far beyond Israel, Egypt and Syria for these shenanigans.
