I am aware of nothing to make me think he is any kind of ambassador for this country other than a self appointed one.
He is entitled to his generous retirement pay, his perks, and the briefings that are deemed appropriate by the current administration.
As far as endangering his life, I am aware of nothing that could have endangered his life, unless a mad lab rabbit attacked him as a memorial to the rabbit which attacked Carter so famously when he was President., as prophsized in Monty Python.
I can think of many national security issues to justify not telling him important information.
Apparently the speech Carter gave last night over live Cuban TV was fairly hard hitting, so I gladly eat any words I used to imply that he was a total dupe in this.
I also agree, btw that the national interest would be well served by lifting the embargo.
