In its 09-25-2002 edition, ABC Nightly News with Peter Jennings reported that callers to California Sen. Dianne Feinstein's office oppose war with Iraq by a wide margin. (my paraphrase)
How wide?
As I heard it, a spokesperson for Sen. Feinstein said that about 200 callers supported war on Iraq, while about 10,000 were opposed.
For the math-disabled among you, that's a 50-1 ratio against war with Iraq.
Last night, and again this morning, I went to ABC's web site to verify the figures, since it's possible that ABC's narrator said "one thousand" rather than the "ten thousand" I heard and reported above.
Unfortunately, I could find no mention of this story at ABC's website. That doesn't mean it's not there, but rather, that I couldn't find it.
Now it is true that I could have misheard the narrator, and equally true that the story could be buried on ABC's website somewhere.
I will call Sen. Feinstein's office later today to verify the figures, but in the meanwhile, whether it's 5-1 or 50-1 opposed, this small sampling verifies my own informal impression that the American people are against war with Iraq by a wide margin.
