"Our government is now responsible for this creature... Unless we are hypocrites we deal with him by OUR laws..."
He is not a US citizen, his relationship to us is kill a bunch of our citizens.
Could we step in and apply political pressure? Yes that might work. But why? We didn't stop a US citizen from being caned when he broke a law. We could have protested that IF we thought undue harsh treatment was being applied (if he was being harshly treated because he was an American it would have been a different story). Our citizens must follow foreign laws when in a foreign country, why would we try to give this thug more "rights" than if he was a US citizen.
"Otherwise any pilot captured by the enemy can be tortured and we cannot say a damn thing!"
There these things called rules of war. If the pilot was not an authorized combatant, then it's possible we couldn't do a damn thing.
