...is I'm reading a lot of "they're worse than us" to justify error, tragedy, etc.
Point One: We do not measure ourselves against them. The standard of behavior is ours to set, not some reactive "we are not them" definition.
Point Two: There is a thin line that separates analysis of an event from justification of the outcome, the Explanation/Excuse line. The former is adult behavior; the latter verges on the adolescent. The people in combat have shown they know where that is, and have shown a remarkable ability to act like adults under enormous pressure. Why can't their civilian supporters find the line and stay on the grown-up end of it?
Diplomacy is practiced on the battlefield as well as at the negotiating table. It is now practiced through the magic of telecommunication on the internet as well, by all of us. The whole world's watching.
That, in a nutshell, is my point. Just freshening that line up a bit.
