Let me see:
Saddam kills 7,000, so that makes the deaths of 7 non-combatants at the hands of our military people OK???
We are -- I keep being told -- the NotSaddam, which is why it's OK for us to do what we do.
I am so tired of hearing this argument. I hear it from children all the time. "Why are you mad at me for pulling the cat's tail? Joey kicked her!!!" Being less bad is not an acceptable standard!
Saying we are not as bad as Saddam is saying he sets the standard for our behavior. NO.
Children died in a hail of American bullets. If any of the men involved are happy about this, I would be both surprised and shocked. Investigation, apology (it won't be enough, but it must be offered), review of procedure to see if any refinement of it can prevent future occurrences: this is appropriate. A defensive, excuse-ridden "at least it wasn't a whole school bus"-type response will not do.
And for God's sake, keep those poor men away from reporters. That's the last thing they need.
Regards--
Mary Anne
