Re: Maher and friends on socialism

PS

Like all over-, and under reaching, someone, somewhere is going to be in favor of something, and someone somewhere is going to be nodding their head in approval. I look at each issue separately, and make up my mind accordingly. I don't follow a liberal or conservative point of view, although I confess I tend usually to pick the side most people agree is "liberal". I would like to think that is because it's the correct side, but I suspect I am subconsciously driven by self- interest, and that is at least partly defined by my socioeconomic class and education.

I don't consider myself an ideological person, I mean, I make political decisions on considerations of what I believe to be fair, and workable. I favor good administration, sound management and my common sense view of freedom and justice. I mistrust "principle". It's way too subjective for me, and too often used to justify someone's personal agenda.

I believe in constitutions, not because I think the founders were holy men and what they say is to be revered without question, but because when honest men disagree on fundamental points you must rely on some mechanical process to act as a flywheel: it promotes stability and smooth running of the engine until a gear change can be properly executed.

I guess what we're going through right now is what in my racing days was described as "double clutching".
