Re: Voodoo economics

"The idea that the Republican tax cuts are going to solve our current economic malaise by creating record federal deficits which drive up interest rates is just plain silly."

What double the interest rate to 2%?
It's *nice* Greenspan has *decided* to lower the interest rate. Question why did he *keep* them higher?
Just to clue you in, Greenspan does NOT control the interest rate- the market controls the interest rate. What Greenspan does do is not screw up & he moderates the market to some extent (a very small extent). Greenspan job is a balancing act & since we have low inflation (which IS in danger of being too low) then the Fed is doing it's job.

"The key statement in your Nationa REview commentary was this little gem: "federal spending is running at roughly 11 percent today — about ten times the inflation rate..." In otherwords, the Republicans in Congress and in the White House are on a spending spree."

Comparing federal percent of spending to the interest rate is a meaningless comparison. You want a low interest rate and you want low federal spending (assuming you aren't a Socialist) but their "ratio" is meaningless.

"The Clinton White House balanced the budget and brought us eight years of the most prosperous economy in the history of civilization. All Mr. Bush has dished up are longer unemployment lines."

Unemployment is still low. We still at a level which Greenspan used to consider "too low"- the Fed changed their standard regarding, mainly because it was thought high tech allowed for tighter job markets- and also warfare reform was given a boost by allowing lower employments rates AND because inflation seemed in control, SO THEREFORE it was thought to be worth any possible risk of causing inflation.
