Robert,
It seems to me that once someone figures out how to make a replicator, they could just start replicating the replicator. Hence the cost to replicate stuff is simply the energy required by the replicator.
If I remember right another idea postulated by Dan Spires a looong time ago was that when nanobots come into vogue and everybody can create their own nanobots, then we have a similar situation as the replicators. All it takes is energy.
So will energy be the new currency? Or is energy a resource that can't be (or shouldn't be) regulated.
If energy were as plentiful as air is on this planet, so anybody with a Godbot could create anything they want, could we even stand to be near each other? Suddenly everybody would be forced to: get along, get out of town, or get the other guy first. The Universe is very large, but what happens when some squattter land his spacecraft on your piece of heaven you call home. Hopefully you can get along, but if you can't and you both own Godbots, their could be quite a battle brewing.
Definitely something to think about.
