re: I think you're reaching a bit...

I doubt if I'm reaching too far at all. And think about it for a second Tom - the leftist utopianists are very often the most prejudiced. Their hang-ups are often as transparent as watching the Japanese pacifists start attacking and punching their opponents in the Japanese Parliament.

While supporting the concept of social order - it's really all about elevating themselves and taking power away from those who have it or in their opinion wield it unfairly. So a powerful lawyer or agent who controls their destiny (or so it seems) is an enemy and worthy of attack. The same is true for their attack on capitalism. They don't mind making a buck - but they horribly object to the bucks the other guy making more has.

If this seems to be an inexplicable dichotomy - it's not. It's just that loathed mirror principle in action: The Bolsheviks hated oppression and became the worst oppressors; The leftists decry capitalism but are often some of the most avaricious practicioners of capitalism.

Yes, it's amusing when Barbara Streisand tells everyone to turn up their thermostats while her mansion is ice-cold. That there are elitist socialists is not a non-sequitur - but rather, de riguer.

That these young writers are good leftists and decry capitalism and make the bad guys practitioners of it is the surest sign of their limited education. There is a flip-flop which occurs when one is educated.

At first capitalism is okay - it is normal. Then with the first glimpse of social awareness and suffering, capitalism is believed to be a bad thing and exploits others. Finally, with a full awareness of the various alternatives and a deep knowledge of history, realizing freedom is the only thing one can provide while equality is a false concept - a red herring which causes even more suffering and exploitation when it is pursued fruitlessly, then the third stage of enlightenment has been reached and one pursues freedom and capitalism is the current socio-economic system which allows for the most freedom.

I wish more folks were at the third level of realization. Unfortunately, many of the folks who support capitalism are still on the first and will still go through their socialist growth period to arrive at the third stage. The writers in Hollywood see the have-nots (often they have been a have-not) and decry the system they feel has made them compete and claw to get paid or find work. The Screen Actors Guild and Writer's Guild are nothing if not filled with very capitalistic socialists!

True enlightenment still awaits many of them.
