Going astray

I'm a bit disappointed with how this thread has turned out. Using Star Trek as a device to set the context of a future sufficiently distant to have little of our present baggage, I was hoping to provoke some purely science-fictional brainstorming about what a future economy would look like. I set a few initial premises, like positing an abundance of physical goods or of energy.

Unfortunately, all I got was a defense of the early 21st Century status quo.

I said that I thought that free markets and capitalism have worked well. But is it rational to assume that this one economic system will always be the best under all possible circumstances? Can it stretch infinitely? Isn't it at least possible that we could build upon our experience with this system to come up with an even better one? Is it reasonable to think that we've achieved perfection already, and we can rest on our laurels for the next million years?

Stretch your mind a little, Tom. Have fun with it.
