Hobsbawm's thinking, quite typical of radical leftists, can be boiled down to "you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs." This saying has been attributed to a number of psycho statists, including Robespierre, Lenin, and Walter Duranty.
The ghastly part of it is that this form of tyranny broke on the order of a hundred million "eggs" (human beings killed by their own governments) and never produced the "omelette" (the glorious and prosperous society promised.)
Every single nation that adopted this form of government became a poverty-stricken living hell, that had to employ deadly means to simply keep their own citizens from leaving in droves.
Every single leader in the twentieth century that proposed and carried out organized genocide of his own people has called himself "socialist."
Yet the clue never seems to land on the Left. I can still easily find dozens of people who will say Fidel Castro is the best thing to happen to Cuba in this century. Oddly, none of them want to live in Cuba.
The fact that Marxists are teaching our kids, holding seats in the Congress, and influencing our culture is an atrocity, but every time I bring it up the liberals here hoot it down like I am talking about invisible rays and tinfoil hats.
The country will be a better place when a Marxist college professor is treated exactly the same as a Nazi college professor would be. Preferably involving tar and feathers.
