Detection is useless if no method of diversion exists or can be developed in time. The solution to that conundrum is a space based civilization using routine spaceflight with a strong incentive for continuous improvement. This would make the chances for diverting payloads and their effective delivery much more likely. Luckily the time scale for developing such a civilization is miniscule compared to the frequency of cometary impacts provided we do it know before raw material limits closes the window of opportunity. I have the same goal you claim to have. I can just see beyond the nose on my face when it comes to pulling the various pieces needed to assure humanities continued long term survival.
