I'm always very impressed by the way JFK responded to NK's (Nikita I mean) challenges in the early 60's.
The Bay of Pigs was a fiasco; Sputnik and Gagarin humiliated the US.
The Soviet Union had the nuclear weapons , for sure! And Berlin just saw a wall divide the city.
JFK replied by: "Let's land a man on the Moon before the end of the decade and return him safely back home".
He sold the idea and it worked, even though both countries almost got into nuclear war because of the missiles in Cuba. And the cold war still was alive and well all throughout those years.
Today, GWB has been challenged by OBL and sells a war against Iraq which cannot defend itself and is no threat to the world. At the same time, one of the 4 existing Shuttles is destroyed killing the crew.
No call for a better, more ambitious and challenging space program.
