First of all, asking for UN involvement does not mean that the holdout nations were "right" about the war and its reasons. If they had their way, Saddam would still be in complete charge, Blix would have a steady job chasing his own tail for the next five years, and oil money would still be flowing into their pockets. If that's what was "right," you can keep it.
Second, the idea that Afghanistan was running smoothly and without resistance until we went into Iraq is ludicrous. While some progress has been made, it has not been smooth anywhere along the way, and no reasonable person expected anything else.
And yeah, the Taliban would never have figured out blowing people up until they saw the Saddamites doing it.
