I think that I may have unconsciously assumed that your experience was like mine in two ways: Toiling in the corporate gulag for a number of years before freelancing; and then working for a large number of corporate clients as a freelancer. I've generally not gotten burned, but I've been burned outrageously a few times. I wouldn't say that I've had many genuinely good experiences, either (thus the passive "not gotten burned"), because the nature of corporate groupthink and regimentation generally makes them difficult to deal with.
My characterization of the essential nature of large companies as "collectivist" is solidly based on firsthand experience. After writing that post I thought of more characteristics, notably central planning and command-and-control. The more I think about the corporations I've known, the more they resemble little communist states embedded within a nominally free-enterprise matrix. Free enterprise doesn't exist inside the organization, it applies only to the organization's relationship to other organizations.
BTW, for third-party endorsement of that observation, think about the fad in business management for trying to create entrepreneurship inside the organization. If it existed there in the first place, nobody would be trying to create it.
