Another, more subtle, manifestation of that xenophobia is the reaction of conservatives (keepers of the tribe's heritage and identity) to liberals. Liberals show up as virtual outsiders because the questions they ask cut to the heart of the tribe's identity and cohesiveness; liberals don't "fit in".
For a good time, go to a college campus and announce that a conservative speaker is coming soon. Conservatives don't have a monopoly on ripping up outsiders. Go through all the nations that have or have had totalitarian control of the press and television. How many are or were leftist? I realize a couple of academics can try to slip past this by redefining communism as "conservative," and hoping nobody notices, but I ain't buying it.
As for fundamentalists getting huffy about comparing our behavior with that of other primates: don't they realize it's irrelevant? The behavior patterns are THERE. Whether this is from evolution or from a creator with a sense of humor, it doesn't matter. You still have to deal with it. You've got five fingers on each hand. Doesn't matter if this is because an ancient fish had five bones in its flippers, or because this was God's lucky number. The fact remains, and people who make gloves have to work with it.
