This has been like turning an ocean liner

Thanks for the great news from the NSS. This was accomplished despite intense lobbying by some of the Mars "enthusiasts"...

"THE" reason for returning to the Moon is to build facilities there for asteroid and comet detection, and it is justifiable by cost/benefit analysis. The majority of the US population, in other words those not particularly delirious about Mars, would prefer to have their space dollars spent on finding the next one of these things before it hits rather than on manned Mars flight, and more importantly, they think it would be worth the money.

If this is done right, maybe it will lead to resource utiliztion, maybe not - but it in any case it will provide mankind with its best shot at not going the way of the dinosaur, and co-incidentally stands a good chance of saving around 70,000,000 lives in the near future...

a professional analysis is here:

while a much earlier rank punter's analysis is here:

The 2 keys coming up are 1) the return of new Mars data from Express/Beagle and/or the Mars Exploration Rovers, which should put a real quick stop to all this watery Mars cr*p wherein Mars is confused with the desert southwest of the US, and 2) archaeological field validation of any of the known "smaller" impacts which killed many people just a short time ago.

Once again, on behalf of the Lunar Underground,
thanks for sharing the great news
