MECA is the same instrument on Phoenix as it was going to be on the 2001 lander. Same goals...you are the one trying to distort the facts again. What is different about MECA now?
The truth is MECA is only one of many experiments of its kind that are needed to acess the human habitability of Mars. But the key issue is whether or not life exists there now. Beagle 2 landing in December should shed light on this. If GAP finds organic molecules, manned space flight to Mars won't happen until Martian microbes having been studied thoroughly and cautiously.
