The only thing we need to understand about Islamic radicals (terrorists) is that we must change them. When we "try to understand" with the goal of coming to some kind of mutual respect and accomodation, we invariably apply our own values, so we fail. Left to themselves they will never change no matter how much we try to understand them.
Imagine a black person in the south a hundred years ago trying to change things by understanding the bigot. Bigotry was ingrained and passed from generation to generation. This cycle was broken by force not by understanding. Perhaps we could learn something by how the force was applied but it was nonetheless force.
A large segment of the Muslim world hates us, our modernity and our values in the same way that blacks, jews and other groups have been hated. They believe we are inferior and must be wiped out or assimilated.
Understanding that is critical.
