I figured the wizards would have come up with something like that. I'm embarrassed that a multi-stage system didn't occur to me. Makes the design more complex, but thermodynamically feasible. Wonder what the fluids were?
Obviously, a nuclear power source would make life a lot easier since you wouldn't have to worry about power requirements, but a nuclear generation cycle would add its own not-inconsiderable cooling loads.
