I don't know, but the idea of having energy beamed from elsewhere to push or simply feed another vehicle is very seducing.
It's like trains relying on electricity coming from somewhere else.
This could reduce the spacecrafts' mass.
Now, directly feeding the Earth from somewhere near Mercury isn't necessarily the idea, but feeding other places in space....why not?
Of course, if an ill intentioned group takes control of it, then we're in trouble; for the moment, SF authors enjoy the topic.
